Gayle specializes in portraits of people and pets and has become known for her narrative portraits which tell more about a person than their image alone. One example of this would be a portrait commissioned of the late Owsley Brown Frazier depicting him as the cowboy he dreamed of being when he was a child. Another example is her self portrait titled “Leap of Faith” which says much about her philosophy of life.
Gayle received formal arts training from Herron School of Art, graduating in 1964. She moved to Los Angeles, California in 1980. Inspired by the “Memphis Collection”, Gayle became an originator of the painted furniture as art trend. The addition of Trompe l’oeil objects to the furniture led to the request for Tromple l’oeil murals and faux finish. As a result of her reputation and skill she was asked to teach her techniques at UCLA and UCSB.
Her furniture and murals have been featured in House Beautiful, Designers West, and numerous other California publications. Residential clients included such notables as Janet Jackson, Bette Midler, Henry Mancini and Jerry Weintraub. The extensive list of commercial sites for murals include: The lobby of the Lance Burton Theater at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino, more than fifty murals for Circus Circus Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and Reno, California. Also included in her commercial mural resume are the Excalibur Hotel and Casino, The Tropicana, and Caesar’s Palace. Gayle designed the art work for the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, “The Vision of the Seas” and painted a ceiling mural for the ship’s Casino. She has also done murals for the Princess Cruise Lines.
Having lived in California for 28 years, Gayle decided to move back to her home town of Louisville Kentucky in 1999. She has painted many residential murals and also designed and painted the children’s area at the Bon Air Library and designed and painted the children’s mural for the Paul Sawyier Library in Frankfort, Kentucky.
